Tooth Fillings

Tooth Fillings at Gulf Coast Health Center

Following a consultation, dental probe and x-rays during a routine dental exam or check up, your dentist might determine you need one or more fillings. Fillings are used to restore teeth to their original structures, integrity and function. Restorative fillings might be required in the event of tooth decay, excessive wear from grinding teeth or biting nails, chipping or a fracture. Several different types of fillings are available, such as tooth-colored or composite fillings, ceramic, silver, gold and glass ionomer. Our dentist will discuss your options and help you determine which type of filling is the best choice for your health, appearance and budget.

What to Expect During a Tooth Filling Procedure

If you need to have a cavity filled, the first step during your appointment will be to numb the tooth and soft tissue inside your mouth with local anesthetic. Once the area is numbed, our dentist will clean the decayed or broken tooth, using a drill, laser or air abrasion tool to remove all debris and to eliminate bacteria.

Once the cavity has been cleaned, our dentist can fit your filling to restore your tooth’s original structure. Depending on the depth of decay, our dentist might also apply an additional layer of protection to thoroughly seal the tooth and prevent nerve decay. The dentist will finish the filling by polishing the area which has been worked on to create a smooth surface and visible sheen.

Following your tooth filling appointment, your mouth might remain numb for several hours. Once the anesthetic wears off, you might experience some tenderness and sensitivity in the area, which should completely resolve after a few days.

Schedule a Dental Exam Today

Although some tooth cavities might cause symptoms such as pain, sensitivity and discomfort, others progress with no symptoms at all. As a result, without a dental exam, these symptomless cavities can go undetected, causing irreversible damage. To preserve oral health and protect teeth from cavities, most dentists recommend patients schedule two dental exams and professional cleanings per year.
