Summer Safety: Protecting Your Skin from the Sun & Preventing Heat-Related Illnesses

Summer in Southeast Texas is all about sunshine, family outings, and outdoor fun—but with soaring temperatures and intense UV rays, it’s also a season that requires extra attention to your health and safety. At Gulf Coast Health Center, we’re committed to helping our communities stay safe and healthy through every season. Here are essential tips for keeping your skin protected and preventing heat-related illnesses this summer.

Shield Your Skin: Smart Sun Protection Tips

The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., especially during the summer months. Prolonged exposure without protection can lead to painful sunburns, premature aging, and increased risk of skin cancer. Here’s how to safeguard your skin:

1. Apply Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen

  • Choose a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Apply generously to all exposed skin, including ears, neck, and tops of feet.
  • Reapply every 2 hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating.
  • 2. Wear Protective Clothing

  • Opt for lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
  • Wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses with UV protection are essential accessories.
  • Consider UV-blocking fabrics, especially if you spend extended time outdoors.
  • 3. Seek Shade

  • Use umbrellas, tents, or tree cover when available.
  • Create shaded play areas for children to prevent overexposure.
  • Stay Cool: Preventing Heat-Related Illnesses

Southeast Texas heat can be intense—and even dangerous. High humidity levels can make it harder for your body to cool itself, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Here are key strategies for staying safe:

    1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

    – Drink water regularly—even if you’re not thirsty.

    – Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks, which can contribute to dehydration.

    – Electrolyte-replenishing beverages can help if you’re sweating heavily.

    2. Know the Signs of Heat Illness

Be alert to symptoms such as:

    – Heat Exhaustion: heavy sweating, weakness, cold/clammy skin, nausea, or fainting.

Heat Stroke: high body temperature (103°F or higher), hot/dry or damp skin, confusion, or unconsciousness.

Tip: If someone shows signs of heat stroke, call 911 immediately and try to cool them with ice packs or a cool bath while waiting for help.

    3. Plan Outdoor Activities Wisely

    – Exercise or work outside during cooler hours—early morning or late evening.

    – Take frequent breaks in cool or shaded areas.

    – Never leave children or pets in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
